The last fortnight of asvayuja is known as Pitripaksha or the fortnight of the month especially sanctified for offering oblations to the departed ancestors. The last day the day of the new  moon ,is considered as the most important day in the year for performing pitri pooja ie offering of food,pooja to ancestors.


Due to the grace of Lord Yama,it came to be so ordained that  offerings made during this period reached all departed souls.

During this period followers of sanathan dharma give oblations of water everyday,This spiritual activity of oblations of water is referred to as Tarpan.
